2014 Audi Q5.

                                                  2014 Audi Q5.

The Audi Q5 has been one of the best luxury crossovers since its introduction and this year it expands its offerings with a turbodiesel TDI edition that's good for a 31-mpg highway EPA rating. The Q5 can be had with four different powertrains, each of which shift through an eight-speed automatic transmission that sends power to all four wheels via Audi's Quattro all-wheel-drive system.
Inside, the TDI sports the same four-spoke steering wheel and revised infotainment controls that were included with last year’s Q5 face lift. The cabin boasts excellent materials, intuitive ergonomics, and great outward visibility, yet the interior styling feels a bit sterile, even by Audi’s ascetic design standard. We shut off the stereo and the HVAC fan and channeled our concentration into listening for ticking injectors and clattering combustion. We came up empty-eared. Compared with a gasoline Q5, the TDI radiates a slightly louder but still inoffensive thrum at idle. It’s easier to identify this Q5 as a diesel when the stop-start system restarts the engine with a more pronounced shudder than in its stablemates.

Audi went a different route by saddling the Q5 with a big 3.0-liter six-cylinder that delivers 240 hp 428 lb-ft of torque. The powerful six-cylinder is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and Audi’s familiar quattro all-wheel drive system. Despite having a heavy engine and all-wheel drive equipment, it returned an impressive 27 mpg during AutoGuide’s weeklong test. That makes it more efficient than any other powertrain available for the Q5 - even the hybrid.
Standard safety features include dual front, front side and full-length side curtain airbags in addition to traction and stability control systems and a tire-pressure monitoring system.
Also available as extra-cost items are rear side airbags and side assist, which warns the driver of vehicles in the Q5's blind spots.
The Q5 TDI is downright zippy, and as is customary with Audi's other TDI models, it comes well-equipped from the start. Combine all of that with Audi's famed all-wheel-drive quattro system and you have a front-runner for the top luxury compact utility vehicle, dated styling or not—as long as you're willing to pay the $9200 and $2100 premium, respectively, compared with the 2.0-liter and 3.0-liter gasoline engines.
