Peugeot 208.
Peugeot 208.
The Peugeot 208 is a supermini (B-segment) produced by the French automaker Peugeot and unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2012. The first 208s were three door hatchbacks produced in 2011 at the company's new plant in Slovakia. In June 2012 as five door hatchbacks became available.
The Peugeot 208 T16 Pikes Peak has a tubular steel frame with a carbon bodywork and front/rear anti-roll bars. Suspension system consists of double wishbones and pushrod/rocker arm actuation for all four corners, while the braking system has hydraulic double-circuit brakes with one-piece light-alloy calipers and 380mm front / 355mm rear vented carbon discs.
It rides on custom 18x13 magnesium alloys derived from F1 technology and are covered by Michelin 31/71x18 tires. Other highlights include hydraulic power steering, pressurized dampers and torsion bars.
Power is served up by a twin-turbo 3.2-litre V6 engine boasting 875bhp. That’s a figure higher than not only the bulk of today’s supercars, but Formula 1 cars, too. Its forced induction is a riposte to the predicted 30 per cent loss in power that naturally aspirated engines face between the climb’s 2865m-high start point and 4301m peak. Claimed acceleration figures are rather impressive - 0-62 takes 1.8sec, 0-124 4.8sec and 0-149mph is completed in 7.0sec.
The engine is mounted in a rear-central position, and as low as possible, to improve the car's weight distribution and centre of gravity, vital for the tricky elevation and camber changes on the 12.42-mile long Pikes Peak course.
Power comes from a 3.2-litre V6 twin-turbo petrol engine that has been developed to produce 875bhp. With a total weight of just 875kg, the 208 has a power-to-weight ratio of 1000bhp per tonne.
Just ask Sebastien Loeb, a man who's no stranger to high-performance machinery, having won nine World Rally championships, who said of the T16 after his first testing session: "I've never driven anything that accelerates so fast! It's got the downforce of a Formula 1 car, the wide tires of an endurance racing prototype and differential like a WRC car."
