Toyota FT-86.

Toyota FT-86.

The FT-86 II concept, built on a Subaru platform under a partnership agreement, is a rear wheel drive coupe with smart styling that's clearly aimed at younger drivers. Toyota showed off the car in Melbourne and took the opportunity to give the press an advance look at the Prius C concept, Prius V, 2012 Hilux and all-new Yaris as well.

The low, highly aerodynamic bodyshell is stretched tight over the engineering hard points, with the muscular bodywork rendered as compact as possible. The concept measures 4,235mm long, 1,795mm wide and 1,270mm high, with a long, 2,570mm wheelbase.

The FT-86 II has a more menacing maw than that of the first car. A huge, oval grille stretches nearly to the ground and is flanked by LED running lights. The narrow, squinty headlights remain, although they flow into fenders more peaked than the original’s. The aggressive look continues around back, with numerous vents and a diffuser adding a track-ready appearance.

FT-86 II concept use a 2.0-liter four cylinder boxer engine mounted up front and driving the rear wheels through a manual.
The concept combines a free-revving boxer petrol engine with a 6-speed manual transmission with compact dimensions. The engine is light weight and has a low center of gravity to attain the best possible power-to-weight ratio. Both powertrain and driving positions have been set as low and as far back as possible to optimize balance for maximum poise, high speed stability, and dynamic agility. With a front-engine/rear-wheel drive configuration, this gives the car lively, accessible performance that is easy to harness and enjoy.
