Compared to the controversial designs of its predecessor, the 5th-generation BMW 7 Series is visually sleeker and more refined, particularly when outfitted with the striking body and wheel modifications of the available M-Sport package. The Alpina B7 offers the ultimate in individual expression on account of its signature 21-inch 20-spoke wheels, aggressive front-end styling and prominent quad exhaust pipes. Optional LED headlights complement the 7 Series' contemporary architecture, though practical-minded buyers will prefer the standard xenon setup for its superior light output.

The 2013 BMW 740 is powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 that produces 315 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. In Edmunds testing, last year's 740i went from zero to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds, and we suspect the new engine and transmission may yield a tenth or two better. Regardless of configuration, the EPA estimates the 740 will get 19 mpg city/28 mpg highway and 22 mpg in combined driving.

For 2013, all 7-Series models now get an air suspension system, as well as dynamic damping, which allows the driver to fine-tune the ride (and handling responsiveness) depending on the road and the passengers. Also for 2013, new ambient lighting, more sound insulation, and other small changes to the interior make it a more comfortable, engaging place to travel.

The Driving Dynamics Control system offers four suspension modes: Comfort, Normal, Sport and Sport Plus. The different modes change the performance characteristics of the car in the areas of shock absorber firmness, throttle response, transmission shift characteristics, power steering assist level, and Dynamic Stability control points (how much the electronic stability control will allow the car to slide before it engages).

Every 7-Series model is equipped with dual front, side and side curtain airbags along with traction and stability control systems and a crash sensor that disconnects the alternator, fuel pump and starter from battery, automatically unlocks doors and turns on hazard and interior lights in the event of a collision.

The 2013 7-Series comes standard with front and rear parking sensors, a backup camera, four-zone automatic climate control, navigation, Bluetooth and a 10-speaker stereo with satellite and HD Radio and a USB port. Options and features available on higher trims include a Bang & Olufsen sound system, adaptive cruise control, night vision with pedestrian detection, side- and top-view cameras, a power trunk lid, soft-closing automatic doors and blind spot monitoring and lane departure warning systems.
