Aprilia Tuono V4R ABS
The new V4 R ABS Tuono is more comfortable and liveable, to be the best naked also on the road. The Tuono V4 R ABS engine, equivalent to that of the RSV4 ABS MY 13, has been updated and improved, paying particular attention to reducing internal friction and sump ventilation. Both maximum power and maximum torque increase which at present are 170 HP at 11,500 rpm and 111.5 Nm at 9,500 rpm which is also thanks to a redesigned exhaust system and highly tuned electronic management. The three mappings (Track, Sport and Road), were matched to the new power and torque specifications of the V4 in order to obtain an even fuller and richer power output at any engine speed.
The chassis has been revised through the adoption of the latest Brembo M432 monoblock front calipers, working with the customary 320mm front rotor. There’s also a new fork, an inverted 43mm Sachs unit with separate compression and rebound control functions, one per leg. Important chassis measurements are unchanged for 2014, highlighted by a wheelbase of 56.9 inches, a steering-head angle of 25 degrees, and 4.23 inches of trail. Lastly, the 2014 Tuono’s more accurately contoured fuel tank is now 4.9 gallons, up from 4.49, and the reshaped seat has more padding for better everyday riding comfort.
Aprilia brought a pair of RSV 4 Factory ABS bikes that were fitted with the same type of rain tires.Under the same riding conditions, the RSV4 R ABS proved perfectly neutral, neat and precise in its steering response. There was no tendency to understeer, thanks to 0.5 degrees less steering rake and a 1-inch-shorter wheelbase that moves the front wheel a commensurate amount closer to bike’s center of gravity. Aprilia played it safe and increased the rake 0.5 degrees to make sure the front end will stay true and stable at the high speeds the Tuono V4 R ABS can reach, which is well in excess of 160 mph.
On the subject of electronic aids, Aprilia has developed Multi-map Racing ABS braking system (Track, Sport, Rain and off), utilizing Bosch’s 9MP hardware, which has enlarged the scope of the ABS functionality by not only preventing wheel lock during braking but adding various degrees of rear wheel lift mitigation (RLM) to the algorithm.
Other changes include also a larger fuel tank (4.9 gallons), and a new seat for better street performance and ergonomics. It’s not clear if Aprilia USA will price the 2014 Aprilia Tuono V4 R at its previous $14,999 MSRP, or will continue its aggressive pricing at $13,999, like the company has done with the 2013 models.
In all, this third-generation Tuono is quite the leap forward more power, better around town, V4 engine, ride-by-wire, traction control, ABS, and only $1500 more than it was a decade ago. The 2013s are still available, and now at a reduced price.
