2014 BMW X6
The 2014 BMW X6 carries forward with only minor updates for the new model year, but it's still turning heads as quickly as ever. One of the first to bend genres between the SUV, crossover, and coupe, the X6 remains among the most unusual of production luxury vehicles on the road.
Those with a need for all-season mobility should enjoy the standard xDrive AWD, a system that has the ability to transfer engine torque thus optimizing control in virtually any road condition. Add to that BMW's attention to on-road dynamics and an extremely rigid body shell, and you have the makings of a 4- to 5-passenger GT. An 8-speed automatic delivers responsive acceleration and efficient cruising. Of course, features such as Adaptive xenon headlights, 10-way power front seats, a 2-way power glass moonroof, Dynamic Cruise Control, and a 205-watt 10-speaker audio system are also part of the standard equipment roster.
The 2014 BMW X6 xDrive35i comes with a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine that produces 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. All-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission are standard on every X6. BMW estimates that the X6 35i will go from zero to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds. EPA-estimated fuel economy stands at 20 mpg combined (17 city/24 highway).
An available M Sport Package is on offer for those looking for a bit more performance from their coupe-crossover. For the X6 xDrive35i, the package ups power to 315 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque, while the X6 xDrive50i sees a boost to 440 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque.
The suspension uses double wishbones up front with a multi-link rear. Buyers will be able to choose between four different states of chassis tune: a basic steel spring setup or one of three optional air-spring suspensions comfort, dynamic and professional. The latter two come with adaptive damping and also receive BMW's Dynamic Performance Control system, with a mechanically operated torque-vectoring system on the rear axle for added agility. Much of this reworked chassis is pegged for the second-generation X6, planned for a Moscow auto show reveal in mid-2014.
The xDrive35i comes standard with 19-inch wheels, adaptive xenon headlights, foglamps, auto-dimming mirrors, a sunroof, a power liftgate and front and rear parking sensors. Inside you get dual-zone automatic climate control, heated 10-way power front seats (with four-way power lumbar), driver memory settings and leather upholstery. Electronics features include the iDrive interface, Bluetooth connectivity, BMW Assist emergency communications and a 10-speaker sound system with a CD player, HD radio, an auxiliary audio jack and an iPod/USB audio interface.
The 2014 model comes with standard stability control, 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes and six airbags (front, front-side and full-length side-curtain). Also standard is BMW Assist, which includes four years of enhanced roadside assistance, stolen vehicle recovery and more. A lane-departure warning system is optional.
